Reporting Without Fear or Favor

Dear Stanly County,

This first issue of The Stanly Independent is a true labor of love, and we are proud to share that it is now out and available all across the county at local businesses, gathering spots, and community locations.

It isn’t perfect. It isn’t glossy. It isn’t polished within an inch of its life. And that’s exactly how we wanted it.

We felt it was more important to get this paper into your hands than to wait until everything looked neat and tidy, because community doesn’t happen on a perfect schedule. It happens when people show up, roll up their sleeves, and say, “Let’s start anyway.” So here we are, starting anyway.

The Stanly Independent was built in real places, over real conversations, in the middle of real life. Layouts were finalized at Uwharrie Brewing. Story ideas were shaped at Sundries. Candidate questionnaires were completed at Connie’s Café. This paper was born in the same places where neighbors gather every day, and that matters to us, because it keeps this work rooted in Stanly County.

This newspaper was created through volunteer hours, late nights, donated dollars, shared skills, and more heart than budget. It runs on coffee, commitment, and a deep belief that local stories still matter.

We’re bringing local news back to the basics: honor rolls, school schedules, county meetings, school board decisions, community call-to-actions, and the everyday stories that connect us. Local wins. Local challenges. Local voices.

National and state news matters, but so does what’s happening right here at home. We’re here to help reconnect neighbors to their schools, their government, and each other.

Local elections matter. That’s why this first issue focuses on helping you learn about the candidates and the choices before you. We hope you’ll read, ask questions, talk with your neighbors, and vote informed.

This newspaper belongs to you. Not to a corporation. Not to a political party. To the people of Stanly County.

We welcome your stories, photos, announcements, and ideas. If you’ve ever wanted to write a column, highlight a neighbor, or share what’s happening in your community, we invite you to visit the Voices of Stanly tab and submit your work.

The Stanly Independent is committed to clear, honest, accessible reporting, without sensationalism or clickbait. Our goal is simple: context, clarity, and connection.

We exist to elevate the people who give this county its character: teachers, students, small business owners, first responders, volunteers, civic leaders, and everyday neighbors doing extraordinary things. If it matters to Stanly County, it matters to us.

Thank you for picking up our first issue. Thank you for believing in this project. Thank you for supporting local journalism.

This is your newspaper. Let’s build it together.

With gratitude,
Your Neighbors,
The Stanly Independent
